shiver. Plays O'Brien's 08.03

Hailing from Salem, Ma, shiver. is an eclectic mix of ambient dream pop and emo-infused indie rock.  Their latest release, 2016's Evergreen has a laid back vibe to it, but it's not afraid to get aggressive when needed.  With constantly catchy hooks, introspective lyrics, and unexpected grooves, shiver weaves an enthralling web.  It's an album that you instantly 'get' and yet, begs for a second listen.  Catch shiver live at O'Brien's Pub on 8/3 with oldsoul, Pushflowers, and Another Musician. -Brian Varneke

Elephants Play Great Scott 08.01

It's been a little while since we checked in with Boston power pop/rockers Elephants and it seems as though they are continuing to establish themselves within the scene and develop a signature sound.  Formed in 2011, the band honors their namesake with a robust, full sound that mixes garage punk fuzz with indie pop vocal melodies.  Their latest release, 2016's Endless Arcade is a shining example of this, a forcefully melodic endeavor that explodes through its opening phrases and maintains a high energy through to its ending riffs.  Catch Elephants at Great Scott on Tuesday 8/1 with Partner and New Swears. -Brian Varneke

Brittle Brian releases new Single "Truther," plays Middle East 8/24

Victoria Rose began releasing music under the name "Brittle Brian" in 2014, nearing the end of her enrollment at Boston University. She began putting out two absorbing electronic tracks on "Instrumentals for Looking at Animals" an album sweetly fitting to the activity it recommends. Then her first full-length, Bony French Cathedrals, was a stripped-down acoustic album full of confession. Continuing her organic, self-recorded and produced aesthetic, she released Verisune, an album released following her graduation from college which lead her to become a staple of the Boston scene, playing everywhere from house venues to local favorites like The Great Scott. Like the stark portrait of its album art, Verisune is a personal album that is utterly unique and intense. Most recently she's released "Truther," an eerie ballad which alternates Spanish folk guitar with Elliot Smith influences. We look forward to anything that this individual singer-songwriter brings to Boston in the future. See her alongside Horse Jumper of Love, Dust from 1000 Yrs, and Blue Smiley August 24th. -Allie Miller

bellwire’s new single “Dreamin’” is a modern take on the Everly Brothers

If the chorus of Boston-based bellwire’s new single sounds familiar, it’s because it is. The classic repetition of the word “dream” comes from the Everly Brothers song “All I Have To Do Is Dream,” but that is where the similarities between these two tracks end. bellwire’s take on this song is dark, stripped down, and is more comparable to the likes of Patti Smith than the pop duo (maybe not sonically, but definitely lyrically.) Tyler Burdwood, the lead vocalist of bellwire, is currently on a solo tour with Massachusetts-based Jake McKelvie, of The Countertops. - Lilly Milman
