Q.D. Tran’s 40 Favorite Philly Records of 2014

It’s that time of year again for our last post of 2014 and my list of favorite Philly records for this year. My procrastination was strong this year, but once again, I just managed to make it just under the gun. It’s always overwhelming to dig into all the great music that we have been lucky enough to come across throughout the year. I’m sure that there are some albums that have fallen by the wayside of this list, but hopefully you’ll discover or rediscover a new favorite like I have while taking this journey. It’s been fun, and as always, looking forward to seeing you on the other side - cheers! - Q.D. Tran

1. Guilty of Everything (Relapse) – Nothing

2. You’re Gonna Miss It All (Run For Cover) – Modern Baseball

3. Full Of Snakes (Fleeting Youth) – Mumblr

4. 7” (Wilsuns RC) – Sheer Mag

5. The Spirit of the Beehive (Ranch) – The Spirit of the Beehive

You can view the rest of the list HERE.

New Music Video: "Chloroform" - Nothing

Nothing just dropped a split 12" with pals Whirr via Run For Cover Records, which also comes with an etched B-side and a full-length "In The Studio" DVD featuring both the bands. To go along with the album's release, the hometown quartet shared a new new single, "Chloroform," and music video to accompany the track. It was directed by Don Argott, who also did the band's "Bent Nail" video as well as Kurt Vile's "Never Run Away" and the documentary The Art of the Steal.

New Track: "July The Fourth" - Nothing

Uh - this is pretty damn weird to us. Nothing just premiered a new track over at Vogue (haha...so chic) called "July The Fourth." It will appear on their upcoming split 12" release with Whirr, which will be available on November 17 via Run For Cover Records. You can stream their latest rocker below.

Nothing Goes Acoustic for Last Philly Show of the Year at Ortlieb's Oct. 5

This evening a small crowd will gather at Ortlieb’s to witness Nothing’s last Philly show of the calendar year. This performance offers an opportunity to capture the group’s songs from a rare point of view as an acoustic set (a glimpse of the bonus material that will be featured on A389 Records reissue of Downward Years to Come V2.0). The band will be taking its solemn yet joyous songs and reimagining them through a different instrumental lens. Joining in on this Sunday special will be the emotive-fueled rock of Sad Actor and the acoustic singer/songwriter stylings of Mark Lanky. Ortlieb’s, 847 N. Third St. 8pm, $15, 21+ - Michael Colavita

New Music Video: "B&E" (Acoustic) - Nothing

As Nothing gets ready for their final show in Philly this year at Ortlieb's this Sunday, they have a new music video to accompany the unplugged event. It's fittingly for an acoustic version of "B&E" that originally appeared on their 2013 breakout album Guilty of Everything. This track along with other previously recorded acoustic takes will appear as bonuses on the band's forthcoming re-issue of Downward Years to Come V2.0, which will be available via A389 Records. Tickets for this weekend are "nearly gone" so grab yours while you can.
