Where the Locals Are Going in Philly This NYE

Nice job, Philly! What looked a little scarce with local representation for New Year’s Eve has filled out into a variety of sweet shows that will have folks spread out all over Philly. Kat Kat Phest, in its fourth and final year, will be auld lang syning away at Everybody Hits with Creepoid and The Spirit of the Beehive, two bands that definitely deserve more of that national/international love and attention in 2016. A Sunny Day in Glasgow, Captured Track’s EZTV, and Mercury Girls have the indie-pop goodness on lockdown over at Johnny Brenda’s. The dancin’ fools can be found with the Making Time crew at Union Transfer, West Philadelphia Orchestra, Johnny Showcase & The Mystics, and Ill Doots at Underground Arts, and LOUDS and Cheerleader, at Ortlieb’s this year. Unfortunately, Nothing at Boot & Saddle is sold out, as you should’ve known that it would, but I’m a firm believer that you can get into any show that you really want to. You just need to get crafty. Maybe unlawful sometimes, but it’s all in the name of the rock gods. Hope to see you out and about this NYE! - Q.D. Tran

New Music Video: "Something in the Way" (Nirvana Cover) - Nothing

Nothing’s video for their haunting cover of Nirvana’s “Something in the Way” (which was featured on the Nirvana tribute album Whatever Nevermind, released via Robotic Empire) really digs in. The eerie combination of piano lead and composed yet macabre vocals establishes a distinct and chilling mood. Directed by Kevin Haus, the footage depicts a woman unable to escape the symbolic dirt and grime.

New Track: "Something in the Way" (Nirvana Cover) - Nothing

With Nicky Palermo's ambient guitar textures, Brandon Setta's hushed vocals, and a lone piano (provided by Myrrias/Arc in Round's Mikele Edwards), Nothing captures the weighted melancholy exuded from Nirvana's "Something in the Way," off 1991 classic Nevermind. The cover was recorded for Robotic Empire's second Nirvana tribute album Whatever Nevermind, which will be released on Record Store Day. Nothing has upcoming plans to tour with Merchandise, and they'll be finding their way to Philly on Sunday, June 7 at Johnny Brenda's.

Weekend Warrior, March 27 - 29

Heavy shoegaze quartet Nothing returns to Philly this evening at Underground Arts. The band has been on a nearly month-long tour obliterating music venues with noisy Miami stoner metal provocateurs Torche and Spanish black metal crew Wrong. Hopefully this time home will be a good chance for Nothing to work on the follow-up to last year’s beloved breakout album Guilty of Everything (Relapse). Come out, and celebrate the boys surviving another journey! Underground Arts, 1200 Callowhill St., 8pm, $18, 21+ - Alexis V.

The Deli Philly's Best Emerging Artists of 2014 Poll - FINAL RESULTS: 1. Sheer Mag, 2. Nothing, 3. Cheerleader & More

Deli Nation,

Our Year End Poll for Emerging Philly Artists was - as usual - a painstaking (and somewhat excruciating) process, but we do enjoy seeing what everyone has been into!

Kudos to rock 'n' rollers Sheer Mag (pictured and streaming) for winning the overall poll and and certainly impressing many with their debut EP 7"!

Also, big thumbs up to heavy shoegaze outfit Nothing, who released our March 2014 Record of the Month, and rising indie popsters Cheerleader.

Here is how it all went down: First, we let the local bands submit their music (for free), and got our Deli editors to pick the nominees. Then, we polled a list of 30+ Philly music scene enthusiasts/experts (our jury), and asked them to nominate 3 more bands of their choice each. We polled our local writers, and we also requested fans and readers to vote for their favorite. We tried to keep things open for each single genre, from Indie Rock to Roots Music to Hip Hop.

If you are interested in geeking out in all the subtleties related to how this poll works, you can read its rules HERE. But if all you care about is the awesome new music Philly produced in the 2014, this list is all you need. Enjoy!
