Weekend Warrior, September 15 - 17

This Saturday, the historic Electric Factory will be hosting Project Pabst Citywide Fest, where you’ll be treated to an array notable and rising indie recording artists. The fiercely open, riff-tastic tunes of Thin Lips will be catching hold of early birds with momentous melodies. Later in the day, bridging the gap between adolescent and adulthood into anthems of universal release, The Menzingers take the stage to the delight of their growing loyal fan base. Sandwiched in between, you’ll also find the fragile, cathartic, biting melodies of Nothing and the sincere, gritty, pop sensibilities of Speedy Ortiz, who has recently welcomed Laser Background’s Andy Moholt into the fold. The elegantly exposed vulnerability of Big Thief, Atlanta garage-rock gals The Coathangers, and “Mr. F*ck, That’s Delicious” Action Bronson round out this daylong hang. – Michael Colavita

Weekend Warrior, June 2 - 4

Sometimes in the midst of the external consuming chaos, one can tap into music as a means of temporary solace. Tonight’s show at Union Transfer provides such an outlet. In celebration of Tired Hands Brewing fifth anniversary, an evening of heady heaviness is on tap. Nothing provides soothing, cloudy melodies, while the grimy, backend rumble punishes in space-clearing fashion and the scorch of guitar engulfs one’s mind. They’ll bridge the divide between the ever-abundant, riff-laced, Arkansas quartet, known as Pallbearer, and the finely-threaded, menacing mayhem of Baroness.

This Saturday, across three stages, Festival Pier hosts the tenth annual Roots Picnic. Along with the event’s namesakes - the legendary Roots crew, the star-studded lineup includes the likes of Pharrell, Lil Wayne, Thundercat, Solange, Noname, etc., while Tunji Ige and PNB Rock reinforce the local link.

Rather than slowing down, the duo of Kevin Nickles and Daniel Provenzano, otherwise characterized as The Writhing Squares, steps into Johnny Brenda’s for a genre-melding, space-boogieing sojourn, with psych-blues trio Fully Glazed setting the table. In support of their new record Vibe Killer (recently released via No Quarter), the snarly, boozy blues-psych of Endless Boogie brings it home. - Michael Colavita

New Music Video: "Curse Of The Sun" - Nothing

Last week, we posted director Jimmy Hubbard's "Try To Disappear" video for Baroness, which was made up of live performance and backstage footage. This week, Hubbel gives Philly's own Nothing the similar treatment; however, he captures the hazy, drug-induced feelings of the band's music during editing for the single "Curse Of The Sun". Embrace its hallucinogenic warmth. Nothing is currently on an extensive European tour that will be pushing forward into the middle of next month.

Weekend Warrior, July 8 - 10

Nothing captivated listeners with 2014’s Guilty of Everything, and with its follow-up, the band triumphs over tragedy, as you may have seen in their documentary for the making of Tired of Tomorrow. And as the group gets ready to leave it all on stage across the globe, Philly’s band of nothings-turned-somethings makes a stop home to celebrate with family, friends and fans the joy and heartache that has come with their latest release. Opening the night will be instrumental avant-garde duo, Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler, who are looking forward to the release of their own LP next week, which was inspired by Phillippe Garrel’s silent film Le Révélateur. They’ll be helping Nothing wrap up the first leg of their massive tour. Also along for the support will be San Francisco Bay Area’s Culture Abuse and Toledo, OH/Detroit, MI’s Citizen. New Track: "Nineteen Ninety Heaven" (Ryan Hemsworth Remix) - Nothing

Listening to the Ryan Hemsworth's remix of Nothing’s “Nineteen Ninety Heaven” shifts one's perspective. While the original, found on Tired of Tomorrow (Relapse Records), finds a delicately somber balance of orchestration and vocals, the remix creates an awakening lilt, glimmering in a youthful manner, ramped up by an escalating beat, transforming the tempo and tonal implications. Come join Nothing for their hometown record release celebration on Friday, July 8 at Union Transfer with Citizen, Culture Abuse, and Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler!
