When it comes to the local NYC scene, Bryant Park’s Emerging Music Festival (EMF) is the place to be. Returning for its third year, the festival is a hotbed for community and creativity. As the city’s only exclusively local festival, EMF is a can’t miss opportunity for everyone interested in keeping up to date with the scene. And the best part is that entrance is completely free of charge (and there isn’t even a line to get in!) The two day event will take place on August 18th and 19th, and will feature bands like Landlady, 79.5, Rips, and more. Led by keyboardist and songwriter Adam Schatz, Landlady’s lush, symphonic soundscapes on sophomore record ‘Upright Behaviour’ pull influence from everyone from Sly and the Family Stone to the Pixies. Such is the effervescent nature of the piece, you’d almost miss the existential tones embedded into the tracks.  Schatz’s examination on the human condition, however, proves life affirming,  and the album offers uplifting instrumentation, huge choruses and the frontman’s soulful but booming vocals at every turn. 

To celebrate the end of this great year that saw them tour with Man Man and Rubblebucket," Landlady is throwing a holiday season party at Mercury Lounge called "Landlady Holiday Spectacular" on December 8, featuring also Deli favorite Celestial Shore, Xenia Rubinos, Cantina and many more - all proceeds from the event will be donated to the Bushwick School of Music.

A band we've been following for a while, Brooklyn's Landlady seems ready to step to the next level of indie rock stardom. The group's upcoming LP 'Upright Behavior' was nominated Album of the Month by the Rough Trade NYC staff. Also, the band recently landed a major booking deal with Billions, which consequently opened the doors to a US tour opening for Deli Favorite Rubblebucket and Man Man. Check out their brand new preview single "Girl" below and catch them live at  Baby's All Right on July 15.

We covered Brooklyn indie rock collective Landlady twice back in 2012, and after a rather uneventful 2013 (at least as far news or releases are concerned) the band announced in February to have joined Hometapes Records, home of Bear in Heaven and Megafaun among others. Led by busy man Adam Schatz (of Man Man and mastermind of Winter JazzFest), the group will be playing Glasslands tonight March 3rd with Zula, Friend Roulette and Star Rover, and then leave for a tour heading SXSW.

Indie folk-pop seems like too simple a categorization for a band like Landlady, even though that is the core of their sound, which is slightly reminiscent of Luke Temple's rather obscure but beautiful debut album, before he started Here We Go Magic. Adam Schatz, the Brooklyn based lead singer/songwriter for this six-piece pop collective, pulls the talent he needs from a pool of 11 musicians, all of whom have the chance to sing and have their turn at different instruments. Their newest single “Above my Ground” (streaming below) exemplifies their mid-tempo, lo-fi take on the genre. The song slowly builds on meandering guitars and languid backup vocals, spiraling to a noisy climax that quickly dissolves on the songs consistently steady drum line.
